Mary was the daughter of Lord and Lady Dovaston. Lady Dovaston was a famous painter. Her pictures sold for large sums, and some of her paintings are in museums in England. Mary fell in love with their gardener (John Budd) and she was forbidden from seeing him. She could not resist, and the two eloped, fleeing to New York. Jane Catherine was born to the couple in Birmingham, New York, in 1855. This from Patty Mercer (Pam2570@aol.com)

The family formerly was from New York, then emigrated to Wisconsin in an early day, and after the war came to Missouri and settled in Clinton, Johnson county, Missouri.
