In 1911 he went to California with his brother, Bernard. During WW I, he enlisted in the US Naval Air Force. Elton entered the US Railway Mail Service in 1920 and retired as a Clerk in charge of a Mail Train, July 1, 1955. Elton traveled two million miles in the Government Mail Service. He was Present of the 8th Division, Railway Postal Clerks Association, Granger, Life Member of Sertoma Club, California State Vice President of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and is a F&A Mason. Marriage record is found in Franklin county book J, page 497

She attended State Normal School at Emporia, Ks. After receiving her teaching credentials in 1903, she taught eight grades in a one room rock school house. Birth reference gives birth date as 2 Mar 1886. Confirms parents names. She married C A Gardner at Michigan Valley, Kansas. They filed a Homestead Claim on a quarter section of land at Towner, Colorado, where their daughter, Vina Vesta, was born. After relinguishing their land claim because they could not find water, Clarence worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad. His job as section foreman included living quarters in the depot at Selkirk, Kansas. They accumulated about 1,000 acres of prairie land with a well, windmill, a four room stone house and ranch stock. Forty years later they developed deep well irrigation on their land. Their other five children were born while the lived on the ranch. They were members of the United Methodist church and are buried in the Carwood Cemetery.

Born Ethel B. Davis, March 27, 1886, in Cass County, Iowa, she married Clarence A. Gardner August 27, 19907 in Osage County. He died May 1, 1973.
Mrs. Gardner had been a Leoti resident since 1909 and was a member of the United Methodist Church here.
Surviving are three sons, Hershel, Fresno,, Calif., Merlin, Leoti and Clinton, Reno, Nev.; two daughters, Mrs. Vina Cross, Bakersfield, Calif., and Mrs. Zola Field, Clovis, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Amy Bahrenfus, Madeira, Calif., Mrs. Iva Bears; Oakland, Calif., and Mrs. Ruth Dolson, Santa Clara, Calif.; 29 grandchildren, 51 great- grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church here, the Rev. Gordon Tasker officiating. Burial will be in Carwood Cemetery, Wichita County.

Rites For Ethel Gardner, 93, Held At Methodist Church. Funeral services for Mrs. C. A. (Ethel) Gardner, 93, were held Monday, August 27, at 2:00 p.m. in the United Methodist Church, in Leoti. Rev. Gordon Talker officiated. The organist was Mrs. Otto Betlack, and she accompanied Clifford Jay who sang "Resting On His Promises" and "Oh Happy Day". Ethel Gardner died Thursday, Aug 23, 1979, at the Wichita County Hospital in Leoti. Ethel Blanch Gardner, daughter of Arthur Wellington Davis and Daisy Emaline Davis, was born near Massena in Cass County, Iowa, on March 27, 1886. She lived in Cass County until the fall of 1900, then moved with her parents to Franklin County, near Ottawa, Kansas, arriving the day before Thanksgiving. She finished grade school in Franklin county. They then moved to Michigan Valley in Osage County. She taught two years of grade school. She married Clarence A. Gardner on Aug. 27, 1907, at the home of her parents near Michigan Valley. They came west to Towner, Colo, on September 1, 1907, then moved to Selkirk on June 1, 1909. They lived there six years until they bought the Lynas Ranch in Wichita County and moved there in March of 1917. She joined the Christian Church at Massena, Iowa, at an early age and transferred to the Methodist Episcopal Church at Michigan Valley. She later worked in the Presbyterian Church at Carwood, in Wichita County. She became a member of the Leoti Methodist Church in 1959. Mrs. Gardner was devoted to her family. She was a good neighbor and highly respected person down through the years. - Leoti Standard, August 30, 1979
