"GEORGE WASHINGTON MERRILL -- Identified with several lines of successful business enterprises in Augusta, Maine, George Washington Merrill is among those who have been established in mercantile enterprises here for many years and have taken an important in the growth and prosperity of the city. He is the son of Paul and Rebecca M. (Lee) Merilll, and his father was well known here as a practicing physician in the times when automobiles and telephones were unknown as conveniences for physicians and their patients.
George Washington Merrill was born in Augusta, Maine, October 2, 1864. He completed his school education with the grammar school and then set about to learn the printing business. For a time, he was employed in the office of "The Main Farmer" and here, learning the trade of a printer he worked until 1898. In that year, Mr. Merrill became interested in the insurance business and established an agency of general insurance, which he still continues to manage. In 1914, he opened a stationery store which he has carried on with success, and in addition to this, Mr. Merrill conducts the Augusta Flower Shop, and operates a picture-finishing business. He is also a member of several fraternal organizations, being a Past Noble Grand in Asylum Lodge, No. 70, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and is one of the trustees of this lodge at the present time. he is a Past Exalted Ruler of Augusta Lodge, No. 964, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and is also a trustee of this lodge. He is a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and of the Knights of Pythias, and of the Elks' Club.
Geroge Washington Merrill married (first) Helen Annette Couch, September 14, 1886, who died in 1895. They had five children: 1. Sara Helen, born June 30, 1888. 2. Harold Couch, born June 5 1890 (deceased). 3. Paul Bemouth, born February 7, 1892. 4-5. Henry Madgett and Loring Crosby (deceased) (twins) born April 29, 1895. "JOHN F. GIBSON JR. John Frederick Gibson Jr., 81, of Barstow, died Saturday of pneumonia at Barstow Community Hospital. Gibson, a native of Newton, Kan., lived in Barstow 67 years.
He retired as an electrician at the Marine base in Barstow. He served in the Navy in World War Ii. He was a member of the Mojave River Valley Museum, Daggett Historical Society, Elks Lodge 1920, International Order of Electrical Workers and High Desert Ramblers.
Survivors include his wife, Annice; two son, David of Palo Alto and Kenneth of La Verne; two daughters, Kathryn Hoooper of Westminster and Virginia of Long Beach; three sisters, Frances Leak of Barstow, Betty Felds of Fontana and Pauline Hook of Tulare; his brother, Jack of Redlands; and six grandchildren.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church of Barstow, 220 Second Ave., Barstow. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park, 37067 Irwin Road, Barstow.

Item 6. I give and devise to my daughter Ellen Forty acres of Land, to wit, W quarter of NW quarter T7 R10. Also one horse Saddle and Bridle and one Bed and Bedding.
Item 7. I do hereby nominate and appoint my son Jackson Executor of this my last will and testament, hereby authorizing and empowering him compromise, adjust and discharge in Such manner as he may think proper, the debts and claims due me, I do also empower and authorize him, if it shall become necessary in order to pay my debts to sell, by private sale or otherwise as he may think proper, all or any part of my real estate and execute deeds to purchasers, acknowledge and deliver in fee simple. In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and Seal this 15th day of April in the year of our Lord 1859, Edward McCallester.
