Civil War "5th Anthon's" Deerpark

"Port Jervis, June 9 - Alfred Gordon, a resident of Sparrowbush, died at St. Francis Hospital, Monday. He had been suffering from dropsy for a long time and was taken to that institution on Wednesday afternoon. He was aged 76 years.
The deceased was born in the town of Deerpark and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Gordon. He had lived at Cuddebackville nearly all his life. For the past few months he had lived at Sparrowbush. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 56th New York State Volunteer Infantry known as the the "Tenth Legion." "Gordon, Ira
Private Co. F 124th Regt. was born at Cuddebackville, Orange County N.Y. on May 11,1847. Son of Cornelius and Typhena (Griffin) Gordon. Received a common school education and at date of enlistment Aug. 15, 1862 at Port Jervis resided with his father, a farmer at Cuddebackville. He was in action at Chancellorsville May 3, 1863, Beverly ford June 9, 1863, Gettysburg July 2, 1868 and at Manasses Gap in 1862. Was wounded at Gettysburgh in the left arm rendering the amputation necessary near the shoulder. Was in hospital from July 2, 1863 to Oct. 19, when he was discharged from service"--Newburgh Telegraph

"DAVID S. MARIETTA -- David S. Marietta was born of Christian parents May 6, 1856 near Salem, in Wayne County, Ohio, and departed this life June 8 at his home in Atwood. He had been in ill health for some time.
At the age of 12 years, he moved with his parents to Polk County, Ia.. When he was twenty years of age he was converted to Christ. He moved with his parents to Benton County, Ia. shortly afterwards, and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. He has been an active member ever since--serving on the board of trustees of the different charges where he has lived.
February 27, 1877 he was united in marriage to Martha J. Tryon, and to this union were born eleven children: Lottie Pearl Denny of Colby, Omer E. Marietta of Dufur, Ore., Grant Lloyd Marietta, Brush, Colo., Floyd S. Marietta, Oakland, Calif., Wayne D. Marietta, Inglewood, Calif., Leslie Dean, Long Beach, Calif., and Ray Z. of Atwood. His wife, three sons and one daughter have preceded him in death.
He served a number of years as township clerk, seven years as county commissioner, two years as county clerk, also two years as trustee and assessor of Atwood township.
He moved his family to Rawlins county in 1887 to his homestead, where he lived until 1910, moving from there to his home in Atwood, where he has lived until his death.
He was a good public servant in office. He was a devoted and loving father to his family. He was a loyal Christian--never too busy to attend church. He was a forward looking man who endured t he hardships of those early days with courage and fortitude. He was loyal to his church. Always there unless sickness prevented his attending.
He leaves to mourn his passing one daughter, six sons, 20 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren-and a large number of friends and neighbors who loved and respected him.
Funeral services were held lasts Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Atwood, the pastor, Rev. L. J. Smoot officiating. Interment was made in the Chardon cemetery. -- We wish to thank the many friends for their kindness during the illness and death of our Father, and for the beautiful floral offerings. "Mrs. Adeline Vian Dies. Mrs. Adeline Vian died in Minot, N.D., May 23, from old age, she being eighty-four years old. She was an old resident of Farmers' Vlley and the body was brought to Sparta for burial. funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o"clock at the home of R.B. Ayers. Rev. L.A. Brenner officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery."--29 May 1917, The LaCrosse (WI) Tribune
