"FUNERAL OF JESSE AYRES. -- Held With Masonic Honors at the First Congregational Church. The funeral of Jesse Ayers was held yesterday afternoon. There was a prayer at the house at 1:30 p.m. and then the body was taken to the First Congregational Church under the escort of Hoffman Lodge, F.A.M., where a funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Dr. Robinson.
It is customary to have the Masonic burial rites at the grave, but on account of the severe cold, these were held in the church after the sermon and only that portion of the service which commits the body to mother earth was recited at the grave."--28 Dec 1896, Middletown (NY) Daily Argus
"Jesse Ayers, an old and well known resident of this city, died at his home, 28 Linden avenue, at six o'clock Christmas morning, in his 66th year.
He was stricken with paralysis three years ago and suffered two strokes since, the last one a week ago, since which he has been confined to his bed. He has been unconscious since Wednesday.
The deceased was born near Denton and was a son of John and Keturah Boyd Ayres. He learned the blacksmith trade of Moses H. VanKeuren, deceased, and for more than twenty years worked in the Erie's shop here. When the shops were removed he went to Cornwall and was employed there for five years.
He was married about thirty-five years ago to Adaline Gordon, a resident of Fall Book, near Cuddebackville. She survives with two daughters, Nettie, wife of C. D. VanInwegen, of this city, and Anna Belle, who has charge of the central office of the Hudson River Telephone Co., in this city. A son, George, died at the age of five years.
The only surviving brother is Samuel Ayres, of North street, this city. Two sisters are living, Ann, wife of John Kirby, of Slate Hill, and Sarah, wife of Enos Smith, of Scotchtown.
Mr. Ayres was identified with Hoffman Lodge, No. 412, F. and A. M., for more than twenty-five years, and was one of the life members.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church for many years."--26 Dec 1896, Middletown (NY) Daily Argus
