"G. M. Surett MARIETTA--George Mitchell Surett, 87, of Jackson Street, died Friday at his home. He was born in Mitchell County, N.C., a son of the late Joseph and Dovie Surett. He lived in Greenville County most of his life and in Marietta for 12 years. He was a retired employee of Poe Mills and a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Jesse Bates of Travelers Rest; a son,, W. Henry Surett of Rt. w, Marietta; a brother,, W.H. Surett of Ware Shoals; 20 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

"Earl Philip “Phil” Leebrick, 83 of Lowesville passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 in Lynchburg.

Born in Lowesville, Aug. 26, 1934, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Lottie Angus Leebrick. He was the former owner/operator of Leebrick Hauling, Leebrick Motor Sales, Leebrick Store and Hilltop Market, all in Lowesville. He was also a founding member and the first Governor of the Piney River Moose Lodge and a U. S. Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters: Virginia L. Harris and Marian H. Cash; and three brothers: William A. Leebrick, Tony E. Leebrick and Joseph K. Leebrick.

He was deeply loved and is survived by his wife of 38 years, Katherine Shipe “Kay” Leebrick of Lowesville; step-daughter, Jackie Sincox of Catlett, VA; sister, Evelyn P. Spalding of Fredericksburg; brother, Glenn M. Leebrick of Lynchburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, Dec. 4, 2017 at Driskill Funeral Chapel, Amherst. Interment will follow in Amherst Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 PM, Sunday and from 1:00 until 2:00 PM, Monday at the funeral home."--Driskill Funeral Chapel, Amherst, Va

"Janice Elise (Renzi) Leebrick, 78 of Tappahannock passed away Monday December 11, 2017 with her family by her side. Janice was born on February 12, 1939 in Alexandria, Virginia, to Samuel R. and Gertrude M. (Grindle) Renzi. She married Richard W. Leebrick, II in 1955, and enjoyed 49 years and six months together before Richard passed away in 2005. Janice was a loyal Navy wife, was very active in her church life and very devoted to her family. She was a member of Howerton Baptist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Hamilton (Rick); five grandchildren, Michael Haltiwanger, Lynn Sharpe, Crystal Pinnell, Elyse Betz and Laura Betz; and five great grandchildren. Janice was also preceded in death by a son, Richard W. III, daughters, Jayne Marie, Sandra Lynne and great granddaughter, Cassidy Jayne. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 2 pm in Laurel Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Howerton Baptist Church. "Nelson, Lovingston, Va June 5th 1847

Dear Sir, At the Request of Mrs. Leebrick, the unfortunate wife of Geo D Leebrick, a man whom enlisted in the Continental Service at Lexington for Point Comfort [Note: Fort Monroe, above, was at Point Comfort, VA] from thence to Mexico, I am ??? [the script over the carat looks like an abbreviation] at the specialties of sympathy induced to make this communication to state that this man Leebrick has a wife & three or four little children that are destitute of any protection only the labour of this man. They are since his enlistment upon the point of starvation & must starve if the government does not interfere.

This man Leebrick went from Nelson to Lexington on (some casual mission) & probably got drunk & made the enlistment. Your honor is hereby petitioned for the relief of the unfortunate little sufferers to have this man restored to them. This man I think is under the command of Col Wallback (John de Barth Walbach) in Capt Talliaferrow’s (William Booth Taliaferro) Company.

The speedy interssisions [a misspelling of the modern word intercessions] of our Executive power is prayed for, in this case.

Nancy received a pension of $3.50 beginning 10 Oct 1852 and extending thru at least 1857. Remark seems to say "Paid in Full". Nancy then received a pension of $8.00 on behalf of her husband's service as Private beginning 25 Sept 1860 and extending thru 1872, at least.
