"THELMA LEIBRICK, who until recently was affiliated with the Garden Court Swimming Pool, has decided to become an instructor. She will start on her duties as a full fledged coach at the Smith Playground, Twenty-sixth and Jackson streets, on Tuesday, when the playground pools will be open to the public...During the last five years she has also been an instructor at Ocean Gate where several mermaids who are making the grade in speed swimming owe their allegiance to Miss Leibrick through her ability teaching them the strokes that are universally used at the present time by the various champions.
Prior to becoming a coach the former Garden Court mermaid was one of the leading natators in this city. Starting swimming when she was fourteen years old, she has practically lived in the water since that time.
Like all mermaids who crave to make a name for themselves, Miss Leibrick joined the West Branch Y.W.C.A., at Fifty-0secind and Sansom streets. She sported West Branch's colors for two years, then threw in her lot with the Meadowbrook Swimming Club. In those days, the two Olympic stars, Irene Guest and Eleanor Uhl, were members of the club.
The new Smith Playground coach made such progress in her career that she held the record of one minute and twenty-one seconds for the 100-yard free style....All told, seven cups and a number of medals are the property of Miss Leibrick, which she won in representative meets held in this city...
Through being associated with such an expert as Fred Cady, who in his day, or rather when he coached the Meadowbrook mermaids gave Miss Leibrick such knowledge on the most intricate strokes that we doubt if there is a girl better fitted for the position of a playground instructor insofar as swimming is concerned.
The Smith swimmers should materially benefit from Miss Leibrich's teaching, particularly if they follow out her instructions to the letter..."--3 Jul 1927, The Philadelphia (PA) Inquirer
