"Mrs. Margaret H. Cook died at her home at Ottawa, Ill., Friday afternoon. She was 75 years of age, and death was due to a stroke of paralysis received three years ago. She was one of the pioneers of Rock Island county. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Hartzell, settled in Rock Island early in the 'thirties, and Mr. Hartzell erected a brick house at the present site of the viaduct. Indians in those days were numerous hereabouts, and Mrs. Cook to the last, had a vivid recollection of the frights they frequently gave the members of the family. The Redskins were especially annoying during cold weather, when they would cross the river on the ice, and endeavor to coerce the families into giving them permission to sleep by the kitchen fire, but as they were generally under the influence of firewater, they were always chased away by the head of the family.
The deceased, when 18 years of age, was married to Charles H. Case, who died in Rock Island in September, 1871. Of the children of this union, three now survive: Charles E. Case of Rock Island, Mrs. A.H. Taylor of Ottawa, and Mrs. A.A. Morey of Santa Cruz, Cal. Ten years ago, Mrs. Case was married to Judge William L. Cook of Davenport, and on his death a few years ago, she went to Ottawa to make her home with her daughter."--29 Jun 1894, Quad Cities (Davenport IA) Times
