"Leoti Boy Killed When Car Hits Train..--LEOTI--Jerry Gardner, 17-year-old Leoti high school youth, was killed instantly Saturday when the car he was driving crashed into a Missouri Pacific passenger train four miles west of here. The fatal car-train collision occurred at a grade crossing while Gardner was en route to Leoti for a school play practice.
According to Trooper Derald Kauffman, he was alone at the time of the accident. He lived on a farm 11 miles north of Selkirk in west Wichita County.
Skid tracks on the county road indicated Gardner had attempted to stop before ramming into the train. The vehicle was thrown to one side of the right-of-way by the impace, Kauffman said.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Gardner. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The death was Wichita county's first traffic fatality of 1956."--26 Nov 1956, Garden City (KS) Telegram
