"BILKED OF $100,000 WIDOW SAYS --MORTGAGED 2 FARMS FOR 'INVESTMENT'--Lecturer Held on Ackley Charge. The 57-year-old lecturer accused of bilking a wealthy Ackley widow of 'about $100,000' was a 'real likable fellow with lots of personality', Mrs Grace Potter Miller, the widow, said here Wednesday.
Mrs. Miller, 77, said she was glad George B. Dewey, 57, had been arrested in St. Petersburg, Fla., and will be returned to Iowa to face charges of obtaining money under false pretenses...
Morgaged Farms. Mrs. Miller, the daughter of a prominent physician and the widow of Dr. Joe Miller, also a physician, said she mortgaged two farms and obtained two loans of $40,000 each from an Ames firm.
'I endorsed the checks and handed them over to him to invest in two motels in Daytona Beach (Fla.) and to make a loan to a church in Denver (Colo.),' Mrs Miller said. 'He told me we'd make about 9 or 10 percent on our investment in the motels instead of the lower interest rate we could get at a bank. He said we'd get about $400 a month out of the motel investment. I had nothing in writing from him--nothing to show for it', Mrs. Miller said...
Mrs. Miller has been a widow for 10 years. She has a daughter, Mrs. Lucille Liebrich of Chicago, Ill., a grandson, and a great-grandson. Mrs. Miller's husband practiced medicine here for 47 years.
Mrs. Miller is widely known for her philanthropies. She presented organs to the Ackley Evangelical United Brethren Church and to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Iowa Falls, of which she is a member..."--1 Sep 1955, The Des Moines (IA) Register
