"Pair Hurt in Motor Crash Aid Fruit Thieves Capture--By crashing their automobile into the rear of a parked truck on Holt-Arroyo highway near Lark Ellen Blvd., Ramona Leebrick of Baldwin Park and Ralph McIntosh of Covina were instrumental in bringing three orange thieves into custody early Monday morning.
The local couple were returning home about 11:30 o'clock Sunday night and in the heavy fog failed to see the unlighted truck parked on the road. After the local people struck the vehicle, its occupants drove off immediately without stopping to ascertain the fate of the other car's occupants.
Miss Leebrick suffered the loss of some teeth and several facial cuts and bruises, while her escort also sustained several cuts about the face and a serious leg injury. They were rushed to the Covina hospital for medical attention.
James R. King of Los Angeles, owner of the truck, had parked it on the roadway on Holt avenue, when McIntosh's car crashed into the rear of the vehicle. Despite the fact that the truck dashed from the scene, the rear license plate was shorn off by the collision, and discovered by investigating San Dimas radio patrol officers. Later in the day, King and his two confederates, William Burns and David Funk were arrested by El Monte substation deputies, and in addition to completing investigation on the accident, San Dimas officers were able to connect the three truckmen with asserted theft of the oranges found in the truck.
The three men were said to have confessed stealing the fruit from a Claremont grove earlier in the evening, and are being held by the farm theft detail of the Sheriff's office for further invesigation.:--9 Mar 1934, Covina (CA) Argus
