"Address book may be clue in slaying -- A clue in the slaying of a man found dead in his South Austin apartment may be a missing address book, police said today. John R. Leebrick, 39, of 1818 S. Lakeshore Blvd, was found dead in the bedroom of the apartment at 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Police said Leebrick's former girlfriend found the body after noticing a light in the apartment had been on for several days. The girlfriend said she had lived in the apartment until Dec. 1 and saw him for the last time Dec 10. She told officers she drove by the apartment every day.
Travis County Medical Examiner Robert Bayardo said Leebrick had been shot four times in the head with a .38-caliber pistol. He had been dead at least five days. Homicide Lt. Jim Baker said the former girlfriend told investigators Leebrick had an address book with names and telephone numbers of numerous people. Police searched the apartment but could not find the book. Baker said.
Baker said cocaine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia--including a weight scale--were found in the apartment. Leebrick had no arrest record, Baker said. Baker said Leebrick did not have a job and apparently operated on a cash basis. "We couldn't find any canceled checks in his apartment," Baker said.
The door to Leebrick's apartment at the Creekhaus Apartments was not locked, and there was no sign of forced entry, police said. Police recovered slugs from two shots which apparently missed Leebrick."--17 Dec 1984, Austin(TX) American-Statesman
