"SAVES BOY, 3, AT NAY AUG PARK - Lifeguard Averts Tragedy -- What could have been the second drowning of the season at Lake Lincoln was averted Saturday when a lifeguard rushed to the rescue of a three-year-old Southport, Me., boy.
The youngster, James Troy, was struggling in deep water in the center of the pool when his plight was noted by Robert Liebrich, the alert lifeguard.
Patrolmen Frank Evans and W.E. Jones witnessed the rescue as they were cruising through the part. they gave this version of the incident, which occurred about 11:50 a.m.
Liebrich noted the child's distress, plunged into the water and swam about 30 yards to where the boy was struggling. Liebrich pulled the boy from the water and carried him by the feet, head down, to the men's bath house where he immediately launched artificial respiration.
Jay Cprcoran, a lifeguard and former City Councilman Russell (Dutch) Armbruster, who was swimming at the time, assisted Liebrich with the artificial respiration.
The first aid treatment expelled water from the child's lungs and there was no need to use a resuscitator.
Police said the child had been in the water with his parents and had wondered 50 feet into water over his head.
