"Lyle R. Gardner, 60, of Manteca died Sunday at Stanford Medical Center, Stanford.

Mr. Gardner was a native of Leoti, Kan. He lived in Manteca three years. He was a real estate salesman 10 years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War; he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 6311.

He is survived by his children, Shawn Gardner of Los Angeles and Candace Duflinger of Fremont; mother, Ruth Gaar of Manteca; brothers, Kenneth Gardner of Oregon, Gary Gardner of La Grange and Dan Gardner of Idaho; and sister, Janice Thompson of Nevada.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at P.L. Fry & Son Chapel. Burial will be at Park View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel."--3 January 1996, Modesto (CA) Bee

"Portland police "train" Japanese TV Star. ...For his first challenge Monday, the slightly built, 132-point Kato worked with patrol officer David Petry, who towers above him and weighs 210 pounds, under the tutelage of Sgt. Kenneth Gardner. For the session, he wore a newly presented "Main Street Blues T-shirt, denoting the Portland Police Bureau, and grey training pants. Gardner explained a weries of holds and maneuvers to use in subduing and securing a perosn to be arrested, and these were relayed to kato by a translator. "Janice R Thompson was born Octoer 26, 1944 in Modesto, CA. At the age of 20, she bore her first son, Todd, with Stephen Fansler and her second son, Mike, with Don Thompson in 1971.
Janice moved from Garden City to Moline, IL in 1965 and then to Owensboro, KY afterwards. In 1970, she moved to Stockkton, CA and then to Reno, her final resting place, in 1972. Jancie spent her professional life as an entrepreneur, auto body shop manager and eventually retired from State Farm Insuracne as an auto insurance estimator due to her disability suffering from idopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). She worked hard and was passionate about dong the very best of her ability no matter what the task.
Undoubtedly, until the age of 55, her primary cause in this world were her two sons, Mike and Todd. No matter what the circumstances, whe made sure her two sons were provided for as she raised them mostly as a single mother. At the age of 56 came her only grandchild, Jaron. Without question, the bond her and Jaron shared created a quality of and extension of life until her death. Other than her work, two sons and grandson, her passion was gardening. Just one look at her yard is all it took to realize this. Janice will be remembered as caring, compassionate, opinionated, independent, tough and most of all, here fierce spirit with which she lived life. She will be missed early by family and friends as the days after her death roll by.
Janice is survived by her sons, Mike Thompson and Todd Thompson; daughter-in-law Sherry Thompson; grandson, Jaron Thompson; brothers, Kenneth Gardner, Gary Gardner and Danny Gardner andher mother, Ruth Gaar.
A celebration of life will take place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 1855 Veronica Way in Spanish Springs. All are welcome to attend."--22 August 2009, Reno (NV) Gazette-Journal

"A sad accident occured in the family of August Hahn, of the Fairview neighborhood last week. A ten year old son was run over by a run away team attached to a wheat barge and the little fellow only lived two hours. The father was away from home at the time. The family has the sincere sympathy of the entire community. He was born Sept. 26, 1900."--2 August 1912, Kearny County Advocate

Shirley Ann Wells, 74, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at the Wichita County Long Term Care Unit in Leoti. She was born March 17, 1935, in rural Wichita County, to Glenn Vernon and Alice Ida Wallace Downs.

A lifetime Wichita County resident, Mrs. Wells was a day care provider. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Leoti, was the Wichita County representative of the American Heart Association and belonged to the Thursday morning coffee club.

On April 25, 1954, she married Edd Wells in Leoti. He survives. Other survivors include four sons, Craig Wells of Garden City, Dennis Wells of Marysville, Wash., Steve Wells of Leoti, and Tim Wells of Vacaville, Calif.; a brother, Glenn Downs of Lawrence; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Leoti, officiated by Gary Salmans, pastor. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery."--20 May 2009, Garden City (KS) Telegram
