"My grandfather, Ed Jones, usually signed his name E.F. Jones. He was born March 22, 1870 in Red Oak Iowa. He was the seventh child of twelve children born to Jasper Newton and Rachel Soward Jones. In 1907, he bought a 240 acre farm for $25 an acre near Gettysburg, South Dakota. His neighbors warned him the farm would not produce sufficiently as the previous owner had paid only $10 an acre and could not make a living. But he succeeded and stayed on the farm until he died July 6, 1952 in a hospital in Pierre, South Dakota."

"Gettysburg, S. D. -- Jones, Edward F., 82. Funeral services held this week in Methodist church in Gettysburg, the Rev. D. F. Lyon officiating. Died at Pierre hospital this week. Born in Wayne County, Neb. and came to Potter County in 1907, purchasing a farm near Gettysburg. Survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Carl Schreiber of Watertown and a son, Otis of Gettysburg."-- 12 Jul 1952, (Gettysburg, SD) Argus-Leader

Some of his brothers came from Nebraska and also settled in the central South Dakota area. One brother, Charles, lived across the road in a home which my father Otis, purchased later and where we grew up.

Grandpa Jones was 34 years old when he married Etta Mae Lewis who was 27 at the time. He was bald when married and had a fringe of curly dark hair which never turned grey. He had a mustache which got wet when he drank coffee or milk. He was about 5'7" and quite thin. He bragged that he had eaten Grandma's pancakes every morning of their married life.

He played the harmonica and mouth-harp and would sing little ditties. In a predominately Democratic area he was an avid Republican with a dislike for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was elected to school boards and other civic positions.

As a successful and progressive farmer, for only a short time he had a pair of draft horses. He bought his first tractor in 1927 followed by more new equipment. His first automobile was was a Saxon-five sedan touring car purchased in 1915 or 1916.

He raised wheat, oats, barley and corn as well as hogs and cattle. During the drought of the 1930's he told of having corn about 6" high one day and the next day the field had holes about 2" deep where the grasshoppers had cleaned the field.

We always milked cows and separated the cream in Grandmas pantry. She bought bonds with the money she saved from the cream and eggs her chickens laid.

He tripped and hit his head on a rock while he was roping a calf. It affected his head causing a rapid downward state of health, and Alzheimer's disease (probably) made his last year or so difficult for everyone.

E.F. Jones was a hard worker, and I remember him with fondness. He was a grandfather to be proud of. "--Submitted to FamilySearch.org by Gerald Edward Jones on 9 August 2015
