"Mr. J. F. Padgett died at 11 o'clock Tuesday night at the home of his daughter Mrs. M. S. Ball (Cora Jane) on David Street. Death came suddenly. Mr. Padgett, who was 60 years old, is survived by his wife and three children: Mrs. Essie Veal, Mrs. Ball and C. J. Padgett. Funeral services will be conducted from the home of Mrs. Ball this morning at 11 o'clock. Interment will take place at Poe Mill church cemetery."--Find-a-grave
"J. F. Padgett, (a) white (man), was charged with being drunk. In piteous tones, he asked the mayor to give him the privilege of leaving the city. He said that he would not return in twelve months if the mayor would only let him off this time. It was learned, however, that Padgett had on a previous occasion agreed to leave town if released from the city court and had failed to comply with his agreement. Mayor Mahon, therefore, decided that it was a better investment fot the city to allow Padgett to work on the (chain) gang for 10 days."--23 Oct 1903, The Greenville (SC) News.
