Captain James S Hartzell died during the invasion at Normandy, France and was buried there, plot D, row 27, grave 13. He was a part of the 749th Tank Battalion, and was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Silver Star and additional Army Medals.

"Posthumous Award to Captain Hartzell. Mrs. James S. Hartzell has received the Silver Star awarded posthumously to her husband, Capt. Hartzell. She previously had received his Purple Heart.
The citation accompanying the award read that on July 5, 1944, Capt. Hartzell's tank was subjected to direct enemy artillery fire. Capt. Hartzell sustained severe burns about the face and hands, but he refused medical aid until he had driven to the rear, procured supplies of fuel and ammunition and brought them forward to his company, thereby permitting them to continue uninterruptedly against the enemy.
Capt. Hartzell was killed in action in France two days later, July 7, 1944. At that time he was commander of an armored tank company.
He is survived by his wife, Helen A Hartzell, two daughters, Ruth Elaine and Mary Jane, of Lawrence, Kas.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.T. Hartzell of Peru, Kan.; an aunt, Mrs. F. L. Hanna, north of Arkansas City."--

"I do remember the Hartzell incident and it goes like this as I recall the events. Hartzell as CO of... "C" Co. was involved in an attack on the 7th of July. It was in the hedgerows and the going was very difficult. His tank was hit and the crew had to bail out of it, those who could since I think one or two were killed. Hartzell may have been wounded but was able to walk so he and the remaining crew members took off on foot to continue fighting until they could extricate themselves from the imminent situation. Since they lost all their automatic weapons when the tank was hit they only had their hand weapons. Hartzell was using his 45 as they fought back but was soon downed by the Germans. I'm sure he was killed on the spot and after the battle moved elsewhere his body was picked up and I thought he was buried in the Normandy cemetery.
