"Lights For A's Park Approved. Philadelphia's zoning board agreed yesterday to permit major league baseball at night, over the protests that howling fans would distrub sleep and wake babies.
The board heard the complaints, then approved an application for construction of 147-foot light towers at historic Shibe Park, home lot of the American League Athletics and National Phillies.
The teams propose to play night games this year-for the first time.
"We're all up in arms about this," Mrs. William H. Liebrich told the board. "Whether we'll take this into court, we can't say right now."
Her home is across the street from the park. Others in the neighborhood had protests of their own, but Mrs. Liebrich wanted to know what privacy she'd have in a bedroom facing the park, illuminated by eight flood lights.
There were some who packed left-handed complements for the league-trailing Philadelphia clubs in their complaints. They were afraid they might be struck by over-the-fence drives some hot summer night as they sat on their porches."--9 Feb 1939, Williamsport (PA) Sun-Gazette
