"Mrs. Mary Ogden Avery. Mrs. Mary Ogden Avery, 85 years old, widow of Samuel P. Avery, died yesterday of pneumonia at the home of her son, at 61 Woodland Street, Hartford, Conn. Mrs. Avery was a contributor to many philanthropic enterprises. In 1891, with her husband, she created and endowed the Avery Architectural Library at Columbia University, in memory of their son, Henry Ogden Avery. The library contains about 15,000 volumes, many of them of extreme rarity. Mrs. Avery presented to the Teachers' College the books collected by her daughter, Fanny Falconer Avery. She was prominent in the work for the betterment of sailors and negroes, and also endowed beds in several New York hospitals. Before marriage, Mrs. Avery was Mary Ann Ogden, the daughter of Henry Aaron Ogden of this city. She was for many years a member of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church."--30 Apr 1911, The New York (NY) Times
