From Comm Bio Ency Juanita valley, pages 1337-8: "Native of Lancaster County, moved to Northumberland County, where he was a tanner and became one of the most prosperous and substantial business men. After selling his establishment, he removed to New Buffalo, carrying on a tannery there for some time, then retired from business and died in 1850, aged 70 years. His wife had died two years before, aged sixty-four. They were members of the Lutheran church, in which he held office."

As her middle name suggests, she was a realative of the Quaker poet. Her family dates its origin from the Shields and Hamilton families of Scotland. Of John Augustine Wilstach, it is said that her great uncle, the Rev. Thomas Ustick, was for more than forty years the admired and eloquent pastor of the Philadelphia First Baptist Church. Was living at 22 Sixth Street, LaFayette, In according to city directory of 1885 - 1888, 1891..

Ruth died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Stella Hatten, at 9 o'clock a.m. at the age 75 years 1 month and 11 days. She was survived by her children by her first husband, James of Riverton, Mrs. Jane Bateman of Beatrice, Neb.; Lelia Monroe died three years earlier. She also was survived by John W. McKissick, of Beatrice, Neb., Edwin C. of Riverton, Mattie Hatten of Fremont, Neb. Stella Hatten Winnie Jones and Nellie Beam of Riverton and W. Jasper of Beatrice, Bertha Fern died at the age of one. 23 grand children, 9 great great grandchildren. For over two years she had been confined to her bed, the most of the time and for over a year she had been almost entirely helpless and had been kindle and faithfully cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Stella Hatten. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. A.A. Walburn of Hamburg.

James VanWinkle was on the tax lists in Nottingham Township, Washington Co, Pa (Recorder of Deeds in Washington County). He had passed away by 17 Nov 1786, since at that time Doroghy had to post a $500 bond upon his estate. Six sons are attributed to here, four of which accompanied her to Kentucky. A fifth, Aaron, was said to have been captured by the Indians. Her son Moses, stayed in the Washington county area, actually in West Virginia nearby, in 1802. After James' death, she married Benjamin Van Horn, and later moved to Kentucky and married John Davis.
