"CASSEL, URIAH, Hummelstown, Pa., was born in South Hanover township, Dauphin county, Pa., February 5, 1830, so of David and Cahterine (Horst) Cassel. The father was born in South Hanover township, November 27, 1795. He learned the trade of tanner of his father-in-law Michael Horst, and succeeded to the Horst estate, conducting the tannery for many years., and has been engaged in the business for fifty years. In 1851 he became the owner of his present tannery, which he conducted until 1893, when he retired from its active managment. Mr Cassel is one of the wealthy men of the region, is largely interested in farming and was formerly one of the directors of the Hummelstown National Bank.

Mr. Cassel is a member of the Lutheran church and is one of the trustees of the organization.

Was born in 1764. He was a cooper by trade, and at the time his daughter Margaret was born resided in Harrisburg, then but a village. The house in which he lived was a one-and-a-half-story log house, weather-boarded, which stood on the Walnut street side of the Square now occupied by the United States post office building. From here, Mr. Cassell moved to what is now South Hanover township, in the vicinity of Beaver Creek, where he engaged in farming and continued to reside there until his death, August 9th, 1841.

David was educated in the public schools. His youth was spent on the farm, where he remained until April, 1874. In this year, he removed to Harrisburg and was engaged in the coal and lumber business for eleven years. After this he dealt in livestock for four years. From 1885 to 1890 he traveled through the Western States, visiting Chicago, St. Louis and other important shipping points, and bought livestock for shipping to Eastern markets. In 1890 he returned to the farm, where he now resides and which he cultivates. He is a healthy old bachelor and a Republican.

Emanuel Cassell, father of David Cassell, was born in Dauphin county, Pa. In his earlier life he was for many years engaged in farming and distilling. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Polly Urich, by whom he had one son, Daniel. His second wife was Miss Hannah Urich, a native of Dauphin county. They had eleven children of whom nine are living: Daniel; David; Catherine, wife of James Baker, deceased; Elizabeth, John, Samuel, Emanuel, William and Hannah. He died aged sixty-eight. He was a Republican and he and his wife were members of the Church of God.
