His father, Eberhardt Steele, came from Germany, settled in Watts township, and died there. The family belonged to the Lutheran church. The children of Morris Steele and his wife are: John, deceased; Samuel, deceased; Elizabeth (Mrs. John Shaffer), of New Buffalo, deceased; Catherine, widow of Rev. He grew up on the farm, and with his brother conducted it until his marriage. After that, he resided in ISTew Buffalo, and was for seventeen years in mercantile business, keeping the store now occupied by Mrs. Arnold; he sold out to J. L. Arnold, and has since lived retired. Jasper Steele was a school teacher. He lived most of his life in South-Eastern Ohio as can be seen in the birthplaces of his children. Jasper moved from Wellston, Ohio to Huntington, West Virginia with his son Ervin in 1914. Nothing much is known of his wife, Mary Ervin.
Son of Robert M and Caroline E (Lebrick) Steele, Robert M. Steele, was a native of Pennsylvania, a cabinetmaker by trade, moved from his native state to Ohio, and during the Civil war was a soldier in Company H of the Fifty-third Ohio Infantry.
Jasper N. Steele was born at Clearfield, Pennsylvania, in 1846, was reared and educated in Ohio, taught school in early life, and in 1877 was admitted to the bar. Shortly after being admitted he was engaged in handling a murder case for a college friend, whom he succeeded in clearing.
He became so dissatisfied with the law as a profession that he never took another case. He removed to Huntington in 1913, and was retired until his death on November 26, 1922. His wife was born in Jackson County, Ohio, September 9, 1855, and died in 1925. They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and Republican in politics. In their family were four children: Mrs. Rhoda Braley, wife of a farmer in Gallia County, Ohio; Ervin B., who is associated in undertaking business with his brother Robert; Robert R.; and John D., a farmer at Tonkawa, Oklahoma.

Middle name from A.D. Steele. Steele says that Robert Steele appears to have lived in Centre County, Pennsylvania until 1846 (34 years old). He is listed as a Justice of the Peace in Huston Township on April 15, 1846 and his son Jasper was born there May 18, 1846. Shortly thereafter he removed his family to Lawrence County, OH. Census reports list him as a laborer in Elizabeth Township in 1850, and as a collier in Milton Township, Jackson County, OH in 1860. Robert enlisted in the US Army on December 10, 1861 to serve for 3 years. He was 1st Sergeant to Captain John Cook, Company K, 56th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He recieved a medical discharge on September 6, 1862 at Columbus, Ohio. The reason given for the discharge is "Eczema". His address on the discharge was Reeds Mills, Vinton Co, Oh. His discharge reports his height as 6 feet, dark complexion, hazel eyes, grey hair. His occupation when he enlisted was "Furnace man". His age on discharge was 44, however he was actually 50 according to family records and census reports. This descrepancy implies that Robert reduced his age (lied?) so as to be able to enlist in the Army. His son Robert added a couple years to his age so as to enlist, and his sons George and James were also in the Army.
