An old and retired farmer, whose long life has been marked by industry and integrity, born on the farm where he and his son Abraham H. Cassel now reside, according to "Biographical Annals of Lancaster County". In 1873, he retired from active labor, feeling that his long and arduous life entitled him to some rest and ease during its closing period. His religious associations have been with the Mennonite Church, of which he is an honored and devoted member. His political views are those held by the Republican party, and he has long been an effective worker in that organization.

"Jacob Cassel Dead. Jacob Cassel, Manheim's oldest citizen, who made his home with his son, Abraham Cassel, on South Grant street, died at the Cassel homestead, tenanted by his grandson, H. Musser Cassel, in Rapho township, near Lancaster Junction, on Monday evening, in the same room in which he was b born ninety-three years ago. He was a retired farmer by occupation, and almost a lifelong member of the Mennonite church. Death was due to the infirmities incident to his advanced age. he is survived by his son, Abraham Cassel, at Manheim, and one daughter, Mrs. John N. Musser, at Mechanicsville; also by three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral was held at the home of his son, Abraham, at 9 o'clock on Friday morning and at 10 o'clock at the West High Street Mennonite church, Manheim. Revs. Elias H. Hershey and Noah Landis, officiated. Interment was made at Kauffman's burial ground, south of Manheim."--10 Sep 1910, The Lancaster (PA) Examiner

John likely arrived in Philadelphia with his father on the "Robert and Alice" on 9 Sep 1736, although no record of children present was recorded.

DAR papers have been filed in his name. DAR Patriot Index pg 119. Service is abbreviated there as "PS PA". One filer is Robin Kay Crawford (national DAR number 637532-A592). In the application filed March 10, 1981, she cites John's patriotic service as "contributing grain and forage for the Army in 1775". As documentation, Robin cites Pennsylvania Archives 5th Series Volume VII page 1144. She cites as proof of the parentage of Mary Gertrude, three sources. The first is National DAR application 303973 by Clara L. Cassel. The second is record of Zion Lutheran Church, Hummelstown, Pa. The third is distribution of estate of John Cassel as recorded in the Court House of Dauphin County, Pa.

Papers have also been filed to the SAR, where his birthplace is listed as Londonderry Twp, Chester Co, Pa.Originally obtained a grant and deed from Thomas and Richard Penn on October 31, 1765, Per Comm Bio Ency of Dauphin County, pg 788.

According to "History of Dauphin County", John appears to be the first one of the family to locate in Dauphin County. He obtained a grant and deed from Thomas and Richard Penn, October 31, 1765. This land is for the most part still in the Cassel family.

Text of will: "In the name of God, Amen. I, John Cassel of Lower Paxton township in the County of Dauphin and Sate of Pennsylvania yeoman, being in perfect health of Body and of Sound mind, memory and understanding. Blessed be god for the Same but Considering the Uncertainty of this transitory life, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in Manner and form following, to wit: Principally and first of all I commend my immortal Soul into the hands of my god Who gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a Decent and Christian like manner, at the direction of my Executors herein after named, And as to such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give and bequeath the same in the following manner: To Wit: In the first place I order and direct that all my legal and just Debts and funeral charges be paid out of my estate. Then I give and devise to Barbara Noler who formerly lived with me, the Sum of one Dollar to be paid to her at and immediately after my death, it being for a full Compensation for her fidelity and attachment to me and her Care and management of my family and in full of all and every Claim which She the Said Barbara shall have unto and out of my Estate, both Real and personal, so the said Barbara be utterly deprived from any other Share of my Said Estate. And, as to the Rest, Residue and Remainder of my Estate of what kind and nature so ever the Same my be, I give devise and bequeath the Same unto all my Children Share and Share alike to be equally divided to and amongst them. And lastly, I nominate, establish and appoint my well beloved Son Michael Cassel and my trusty friend Jacob Shuss(sp?) of the Township of Paxton and County of Dauphin, Farmer to be the Executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all other Wills, Legacies and bequests by me heretofore made. And declaring this and no Other to be my Last will and Testament. In Witness whereof, I have Signed, Sealed, published and declared this to be my Last Will and Testament in the presence of the Subscribers, witnesses hereto, who at my instance and at my bequest have Subscribed their names hereto this Thirtyeth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fourteen 1814. From Dauphin County File Drawer #119 (September 25, 1816): "An account of Michael Cassel and Jacob Shope Executors of the Last Will and Testament of John Cassel late of the Township of Lower Paxton in the County of Dauphin deceased exhibiting the amount of all and Singular the goods and chattels rights and credits which were of the said Testator at the time of his death which came to their possession or knowledge and also all their payments and disbursements made out of the same on account of Debts and otherwise.

"Imprimus the accountants charge themselves with the amount of the goods and Chattels of Said Testator at the time of his death according to an inventory thereof exhibited into the Registers Office: $1690.79.

From Dauphin County Orphan's Court Docket D-1, pg 491 (March 10, 1817): "Michael Cassel and Jacob Shope Executors of John Cassel late of Lower Paxton township deceased appears in court and produce their account upon the estate of the said deceased duly ? by the Register Balance in their hands (including eight bonds of fifty pounds each) the sum of one thousand four hundred and eighty five dollars and twenty four cents which account is allowed and confirmed. By the court."
