Death claimed the fifth tornado victim on Monday morning, when Ralph C. McMillan, age 33 years, passed away at the Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital in Wakeeney.

Mr. McMillan was critically injured in the tornado when his house was completely demolished and he was carried out into the street. He suffered from any cuts and bruises and a broken back, and remained in a critical condition for several days but was showing a nice improvement the past week and hopes were held for his complete recovery. Monday morning he complained of feeling faint and passed away shortly afterwards. It is thought his death was caused from a blood clot.

Mr. McMillan and family moved to Wakeeney about a year ago when he was employed as manager of the Western Co-Op Electric Ass'n at Wakeeney, and he has made a large number of friends in this community. He is survived by his wife and there three small daughters, Susie, Sharon and Betsy, of Wakeeney; also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McMillan Sr., of Limon, Colorado, and other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted this morning at the Presbyterian Church in Wakeeney with Rev. Don Bray officiating.

Burial in the Memorial Park Cemetery at Hutchinson, Kansas, in charge of Reno Masonic Lodge No. 140 of Hutchinson.

The June 28, 1951 "Western Kansas World" began it's tornado coverage this way. The most serious catastrophe in its history struck Wakeeney City shortly after midnight Tuesday, when a tornado struck in the north part of the city, killing three local people and completely destroying 45 homes, and causing heavy damage to about sixty more. The loss is estimated at two million dollars. The storm struck with a sudden fury and those living in the tornado district report the air was a mass of whirling timbers, household furniture and three limbs. Homes, cars and trees were completely demolished when heavy timbers were smashed to kindling wood and large trees torn tot he ground. Mrs and Mrs. James Hladek, 64 and 66 years, were killed when their house was wrecked by the tornado. Daniel Rohrbacher, age 65 years, was killed when the house he was living in was destroyed and he was carried out in the street by the force of the wind. Over 100 victims of the storm were treated at the hospital in Wakeeney early Wednesday morning and during the day, for major and minor injuries. The most critically injured were taken to the hospital at Hays and some to the Quinter hospital in order to relieve the crowded condition at the Wakeeney hospital. A number of local women assisted the doctors and nurses at the hospital during the early morning hours and also throughout the day. Doctors from Hays, Ellis and Hill City also assisted the nurses in caring for the victims.
