In 1782, John was appointed Surveyor of the road in Botetourt County. In 1887, John is shown on the tax list in Botetourt County, paying taxes for 10 horses and 12 cows. Mentioned in father James's will dated 14 June 1799 and probated in 1801.

John Denny, with John and Simon McAllister, made claims in the township in 1834. John McAllister and family moved to Oregon in 1852; Simon lived and died on section 12, where he first located; so did his wife. His son, Wesley, is living on the old place; he was married to Harriet Reed. John McCallister wrote a diary on the trip: "Diary of Rev.
