Name given as Landis G Manum in marriage record. Also widely known as Lenus G. Manum.

"Their New Driver. Lenus G. Manus, for over a year coachman for Superintendent O. E. McClellan, of the Pennsylvania railroad, has been employed by the Paxton Fire Company as driver. Mr. Manum assumed the duties of his new position this morning."--14 Apr 1890, Harrisburg (PA) Daily Independent

"PAXTGON FIRE COMPANY WILL HEAR REPORT FROM COUNSEL --Mayor Makes a Statement As to His Position in the Case of Driver Manum.--The members of the Paxton fire engine company will hear a report from their attorneys, Messrs. Hargest and Hargest, this evening, relative to their legal right to retain Lenus Manum as driver for the company in defiance of an order from Mayor McCormick for the expulsion of Manum and John A. Stucker, both of whom were arrested by Chief Engineer George W. Lutz, charged with being drunk in the engine house in violation of a posted rule which had been issued by the mayor.
A committee composed of George B Stucker, James Walters, John Gilluns, C.T. Mackenson and T. Peoples conferred with the mayor several days ago, but the mayor refused to recede from the stand ha had taken in the matter. Regarding the action in refusing the committe's request, the mayor said: "I believe the public in general does not understand in full my reasons for refusing to be a party to the reinstatement of Driver Manum. The impression has been made that I have been too severe in not granting Manum another trial. The truth of the matter is that Manum was on trial when he was arrested. I had previously found him intoxicated and had warned him. I told him that if he again apeared on duty under the influence of lizuor, his dismissal would follow. Manumm then solemnly promised to take the pledge and quit drinking.
"Manum is not the only man in the city's employ that I have warned. I have exacted promises to quit drinking from several other drivers who appeared at the engine houses not fit for duty.l Several of my police officers are also on probation.
"I cannot do other than I threatened. If I gave Manum another chance there is no reason why every other man to whom I ave spoken should not have the same privilege. Lenience at this time would be misplaced and would ruin the discipline of both police force and fire department."
It is claimed that several of the members of the Paxton fire company will advocate the disbandment of the organization if the opinion of the attorneys is to the effect that the mayor can compel the expulsion of members of the fire company on charges such as have been preferred. What advice the lawyers will give the fire company has not been divulged but the opinion is in the hands of members of the special committee appointed by the company and will be presented at the meeting of the company this evening."--6 May 1902, Harrisburg (PA) Daily Independent

"MAYOR WILL SUSPEND PAXTON FIRE COMPANY. -- Friendship Company Refuses to Accept Apparatus. -- Mr. McCormick Issues a Statement This Afternoon Which He Discusses - Paxton Applies to Court for An Injunction -- The members of the Paxton fire engine company, in defiance of the order of Mayor McCormick, reinstated Lenus G Manum as driver of the company this mroning and Chief Engineer George W. Lutz, of the fire department, in compliance with the mayhor's order, removed the engine and hose carriage of the company to Calder's stable, the Friendship fire engine house, where it had been directed to be taken by the mayor having been barred against the admittance of the apparatus.
Late this afternoon the members of the Paxton fire engine company are applying to the courts through their attorneys, Messrs. Hargest and Hargest, for an injunction restraining the mayor from removing the apparatus from the Paxton fire engine house..."7 May 1902, Harrisburg (PA) Daily Independent

"DRIVER MANUM'S RESIGNATION -- Paxton Fire Company Relieved of Investigating Charges -- FOUR MEMBERS UNDER THE BAN --Names May be Droped From Roll to Save Company to the Department --Members of the Paxton Steam Fire Engine Company last evening held a special meeting and took action looking toward a settlement of all differences with the Mayor. At the close of the session the company was without a driver and four members were under ban for an investigation which will in all probability result in their expulsion.
The committee, which had learned of charges that Driver Lenus Manum had been drinking since the removal of the apparatus, reported the matter to the company and stated that the Mayor was ready to furnish evidence substantiating this charge. It was decided to have the horse committee investigate and ascertain from what source the information came, but before final action was taken, Driver Manum in open meeting tendered his resignation and said he would continue in charge of the horses until someone else could be appointed, but not as a member of the Paxton company...."--24 Dec 1902, Harrisburg (PA) Telegraph
