Leebrick, 14, sets weightlifting marks
Brian Leebrick has been power weightlifting for only a couple of months, but he's already broken state and national records.Leebrick, 14, started power lifting at Gold's Gym in Charlotte earlier this year. The gym has a team of young lifters who compete at meets in North Carolina and elsewhere.
Leebrick's first competition was the 2003 Southern Open Powerlifting Championships in Liberty on Feb. 23, where he competed in squat, bench press and dead lift. The records he broke in his division (14- to 15-year-old, 105 weight class) are:
Squat. He lifted 160 pounds, and the old state record was 115 pounds.
Dead lift. On his second attempt he lifted 250 pounds, beating the old state record of 170 pounds and the old national record of 215. Then on his third attempt 20 minutes later, he broke his own record by lifting 255 pounds.
Total combined weight: His total was 515 pounds; the old state record was 440.
Leebrick is a freshman at Independence High. His dad, Paul, calls him the "strongest scrawny kid in America."

Mr. Leebrick proudly served in the military for 22 years, retiring from the U.S. Navy as senior chief in 1970. More recently he enjoyed golfing and singing with the United Methodist Men's Chorus.

Mr. Leebrick proudly served in the military for 22 years, retiring from the U.S. Navy as senior chief in 1970. More recently he enjoyed golfing and singing with the United Methodist Men's Chorus. He is survived by his fiancée, Christine Wicker; his sons, Richard Leebrick Sr. and his wife Bonnie and Raymond Leebrick and his wife Rosa; his daughter, Deborah Hanson; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Iris Ortega, Catherine Irene Leebrick and Edie Moore. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27, at Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. On this 11th day of August, A.D., one thousand eight hundred and ninety, before me, an officer duly authorized to administer oaths for general purposes within and for the county and state aforesaid, personally appeared Mrs. Caroline B. Steele, aged 74 years, a resident of the county of Jackson, state of Ohio, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Robert M. Steele, who enlisted under the name of Robert M. Steele at ----, on the 10th day of December AD 1861, in Co, K, 56 Regt Ohio Inf Vols, and served at least ninety days in the late War of the rebellion, and was HONORABLY DISCHARGED on the 6th day of September 1862 and died on the 13 day of Dec 1889. That she was married to her said husband on the 21st day of October 1836, by Rev. Peter Gray, at Huntington Co, Pa and that her maiden name was Caroline B. Leebrick there being no legal barrier to said marriage her first husband's name was Frederick Hockman who died six months after their marriage her maiden name being Leebrick. That she has not remarried since the death of the said Robert M. Steele. That she is without other means of support than her daily labor. That the names and dates of birth of all the children now living under sixteen years of age of the soldier are as follows: none. That she has heretofore applied for pension and the number of her former application is on file at Pension Office no. 415356. That her said husband had drawn pension, which is numbered ctf No 282,818. That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of June 27, 1890.
She hereby appoints F. G. coldren, of Washington, DC, her true and lawful attorney to prosecute her claim, and she hereby promises and agrees to pay her said attorney the sum of ten ($10) dollars for his services herein, which sum she authorizes and requests the Commissioner of Pensions to pay out of the pension which may be granted her under this application.
That her post office address is Wellston, county of Jackson, state of Ohio. Claimant's signature Caroline B. Steele.
