Came to America in 1884 with his parents and lived in IL for three years before the family moved to western Kansas in 1887. First attended school in an abandoned Dougout (an old house built out of sod and partly beneath the ground.) in 1888 and 1889. His teacher's name was Miss Foster. Later had school in an abandoned sod house. The third winder had a man teacher and an old store building was moved down from Cornado and used as a school house. Started farming in Northern Kearny Co.

Attended grade school at North Kearny School and graduated from Lakin High School in 1966. Graduated from Garden City Junior College in 1968 and then went on to Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS, graduating form there in 1971 with a BS in Agricultural Engineering. Attended Graduate School at Kansas State the following summer. In Oct 1971 entered the Navy and served as an instructor for training pilots for submarine patrol.
At the present time is an Aerial Pesticide Applier Engineer with the College in Manhattan, KS and has a WRK consulting service.

Attended Eureka School in north Kearny Co. during his grade school years. His freshman year in high school was spent in Leoti (Wichita County Community High School); his grandmother Emma Bloedorn, lived there and he stayed with her. In fact, she had three boarders that year, Walter Breitkreutz, a nephew, Dorothy Breitkreutz, a niece, and her grandson Erwin. Erwin spent his next three years of high school at Lakin, KS, graduating from there in 1938. He Helped his father on the farm until he joined the navy in Feb. 1941. Received his basic training at San Diego and then was sent to Great Lakes for special training. Was in Guam from June until Nov 1945 as an airplane mechanic. After his discharge in Nov, 1945, he and his wife lived with her parents until Jan. 1946 at which time they moved back to western Kansas and started farming at their present home in 1949.
"Erwin R. Kuhlman --LAKIN -- Erwin R. Kuhlman, 87, Lakin, died Saturday Sept. 30, 2006. Mr. Kuhlman was born Dec 31, 1918, in North Kearny County. He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Vera A., of the home; a son, Dennis of Salina; a daughter, Pamella Hahn of Dallas; two brothers, Wallace of Lakin and Earl of Springfield, Mo.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lakin. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Garden City area veterans.

Attended Columbia School for the 1st semester of the first grade and the second semester moved into the new North Kearny School. Graduated from Lakin High School in 1963, working at the Lakin Hospital during the summer of her Junior year. After graduating from high school, worked as a secretary for the Business Manager at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, KS. Attended Emporia State Teachers College in the fall of 1963; went to the University of MO during the summer of 1965 and graduated from Emporia State in 1966 with a BS in Business.

Attended grade school at Eureka School (missed one whole year of school because of Rheumatic Fever); graduated from Lakin High School in 1939. Worked for a farmer until he was drafted into the army in Nov 1941. Her served with the 3rd Armored Division -- received his basic training at Camp Polk in Louisiana after which his unit was sent to California for three months for desert training. He was aslo stationed at Indiantown Gap, PA and at Camp Pickett in Virginia. Served overseas in England, France, Belgium and Germany as a mechanic for the tanks and trucks. Returned from overseas in Sept 1945 and was discharged Oct 14, 1945.
