"OBITUARY. -- Martin B. Hartzell. -- Martin Bash Hartzell, an old and highly esteemed citizen, and father of Major Will M. Hartzell, our worthy Chief of Police, died at his residence on the South Side at two o'clock yesterday morning. The deceased was a native of Westmoreland county, having been born near Greensburg in 1807. He was a hatter by trade, but the business impaired his health, and he was compelled to seek other employment. He has resided in this city for thirty years, and was a good and useful citizen, highly esteemed for his probity and worth. For many years past, he has been employed as an officer in the Court of Common Pleas, and occupied that position up to the time of his death. He was a consistent member of the Grace Lutheran Church, South Side, where he has lived for many yearss, and held the office of deacon in the church. He leaves a family of four sons and one daughter, all married, two sons and three daughters having passed away before him. He was of a genial, kindly disposition, and will be greatly missed in the circles in which he moved. The funeral will take place on Friday morning at eleven o'clock. The members of the family have sincere sympathy in their sad bereavement."--7 Sep 1876, The Pittsburgh (PA) Daily Commercial
